Transport management

Many business processes start and end with transport. We support you in the development of a requirement-based transport solution and accompany you from analysis to the development of concepts and strategies and the implementation and controlling of measures. Cooperation contributes to efficient and environmentally friendly transport.

We analyse your transport processes and examine quantities, services, resources and CO2 and energy consumption, as well as IT support and efficiency. We use both modern and traditional tools such as SWOT analysis to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and risks. We are familiar with important trends and identify influencing factors.

Our Services

1. Screening Check
  • Situation analyses in the company on transport (quantities, services, resources, CO2 and energy consumption in transport, processes, IT support, profitability)
  • SWOT analysis (opportunities / risks, strengths / weaknesses), identification of problems/conflicts and need for action
  • Tailored environment analyses for the company with regard to relevant trends and influencing factors (focus on road/rail, traffic, regulation)
  • Opportunity and risk analyses
  • Definition of strategies and solutions, clarification of objectives
  • Conducting workshops within the company
2. Strategy / Concept
  • Preparing SWOT analyses for strategic discussion
  • Clarification of potential influence and scope for action
  • Identifying goals and directions
  • Identification of strategic options and concept development
  • Development and evaluation of measures according to fields of action • Preparation of action and implementation plans (road maps)
  • Conducting workshops within the company
3. Realisation and optimisation of measures
  • Assistance with or development of feasibility studies
  • Preparation of specifications for the evaluation of implementation partners
  • Tendering strategies and tenders
  • Controlling and monitoring with post-evaluation of measures
  • External implementation project management, team leadership and reporting to management (only if services from points 1 or 2 have already been provided)

Questions and answers on transport management

How can effective transport management help to reduce costs and make supply chains more efficient?

Transport plays a crucial role for countless companies. Whether they are transporting raw materials for further processing or goods for sale, companies benefit from sophisticated transport solutions in a variety of ways. At Rapp, we support you in improving your transport management.

We analyse all aspects of your transport chain in detail.

We always focus on cost-effectiveness. We determine whether there are ways to make your transport management more efficient and therefore more cost-effective. Using various methods, we identify optimisation potential and make concrete suggestions for improving your transport chain.

For example, we check whether it is financially more worthwhile for your company to outsource transport services or to provide them yourself. To do this, we weigh up the costs and benefits.

If it proves to be more cost-effective to commission a transport company, we will determine which partner is best suited for the job. If it is more worthwhile to handle the transport yourself, we will also be happy to support you in doing so.

Which aspects of transport management are important for the reduction of CO₂ emissions and the sustainability of the transport sector?

Road transport accounts for a significant share of global CO₂ emissions. In Switzerland, transport (excluding international aviation) causes 41 percent of the nation's CO2 emissions. 13.6 million tonnes of CO₂ were emitted in this sector in 2022. Even though there has been a downward trend for years, the path to this goal is still a challenging one. Efficient transport management helps in meeting the challenge.

At Rapp, we scrutinise your transport management and identify potential for improvement. This involves not only factors such as cost-effectiveness, but also environmental friendliness and sustainability. On this basis, we create a concept that enables you to reduce the environmental impact of your transport solution.

A key element of sustainable transport is the switch to vehicles with zero CO2 emissions. The number of suppliers of vehicles in all weight classes with alternative drive systems has increased sharply in recent years. We will check on your behalf which models are suitable for your company's individual requirements. This process can also clarify whether it is possible to shift part of all of your transport to rail.

How are route planning and load optimisation used to improve transport efficiency and minimise empty runs?

An important part of transport management is optimised route planning. This is why our measures to optimise your transport start here. We analyse the transport routes used by your company and check to what extent they can be improved. This not only increases efficiency, it also reduces costs and environmental impact.

Optimised route planning can also avoid or at least minimise empty runs. The same applies to the cost-effective loading of transport vehicles. Optimising loading holds enormous potential for efficient transport. If the cargo area of a lorry is fully utilised, fewer journeys are necessary.

Depending on size, complexity and requirements, the use of a transport management system (TMS) is recommended. We will be happy to help you with consultation and the selection, implementation and realisation of a suitable solution for your company. If desired, the TMS can also be connected to the existing ERP, enabling data to be exchanged in a standardised and timely manner.

What measures and processes are implemented in transport management to ensure smooth communication and cooperation between different players?

A variety of people and companies work together on transport. Timely, correct communication between the players is important to ensure a smooth transport chain. As part of the screening check in which we analyse your transport management, we also scrutinise the interaction between the parties involved.

In particular, transport includes:

  • Drivers
  • Persons responsible for the warehouse
  • Suppliers
  • Partners
  • Customers

The flow of information can be constantly maintained thanks to new tools and methods (e.g. TMS with real-time GPS data). For example, delays due to traffic jams can be communicated promptly to the next arrival points to avoid unnecessary waiting times. This optimises the processes on site.
